Kukai (弘法大師 空海)is the Monk. The founder of “Shingon Esoteric Buddahism(=真言密教)” in Japan.”
The Amazing and Mysterious story of Kukai (弘法大師 空海): The Monk of Mount Koya(=高野山).”
My name is Kiko Aizaki.
I would like to talk you about an Amazing and Mysterious story of Kukai (弘法大師
空海)
a Monk in Mount Koya. (=高野山)”
Kukai was said to have entered into meditation
(=made a self Mummy,即身仏)on 21st.March 835 AD through “Shingon Esoteric Buddahism(=真言密教)at Okuno-in(=奥の院) at the Mount Koya(=高野山)in Wakayama prefecture.
The belief that Kukai continues to meditate
at Okuno-in at Mount Koya exisit to this day.
So I wanted to focus this blog episode on Kukai
(21st March, 2023.)
In April ,2018 I visited Mount Koya in Wakayama
prefecture in Japan.
The reason why is that my yoga customer strongly
recommended me to go to Mount koya to meet Kukai.
Kulai was a Heian period Monk who moved to China
and learned “Shingon
Esoteric Buddahism.
He took these learning to Japan and become the
founder of “Shingon Esoteric Buddahism” at Mount Koya.
My yoga customer visits Mount Koya and practices
buddahism while staying at a temple(=Shukubo, inn 宿坊) every
year.
Syukubo is a tample where many Monks care and
service tourists who would like to feel good and enjoy the mystery of buddshism.
At shukiubo (=inn) in Mount Koya where they
start in the early morning Monks pray with Gomafire ,chanting and Meditation(=Zazen,座禅).
Ⅰ was impressed to hear this story. It made
me excited visit to mount Koya.
But it was difficult to make a reservation at
the Shukubo(=inn).
because that season was in the middle of a consecutive
holiday (=Golden week) in spring in Japan.
But My desire to visit the Shukbo(=inn) was
more than to give up to reserving.
I tried to make a reservation for Shukubo(=inn)
I was lucky enough to stay for one day there!
I bought a ticket to visit Mount of Koya.
But next day, a Staff of call-center asked me
to change to another Shukubo(=inn) which was more expensive.
That reason was duo to double booking.
I understood with good grace. And I checked
into another Shukubo(=inn) by internet.
I was so excited to go there!
That day was 29th April 2018, I left my house
with my husband.
We took 3 hour 30minuts to Mount Koya by car.
And then We went to Shukubo (=inn). where many
monks served and supported us.
Our room
was neatness, quiet and beautiful.
We put the luggage in the room then we went
to Koyasan-Kongobuji where Kukai opened “Shingon Esoteric
Buddhism” for first time.
I was lost in thought searching about kukai-activity
and life in Mount Koya before I visiting there,
And next I visited Okuno-in (=inner sanctuary)
at Icinohashi where the entrance of Okuno-in.
This area is created by around 2km with road
approaching to Okuno-in. There are many tombstones of historical successive generation
of Shoguns( =Generals,将軍)
To be honest. I had a bad feeling that there
were a lot of regrets and chagrins of sense.
In fact, there were many successive generations
of historical generals in Japan.
For example, Takeda Shingen(武田信玄), Oda Nobunaga(織田信長),Toyotmi Hideyoshi(=豊臣秀吉), Uesugi kennshin(上杉謙信), Date Masanume(=伊達政宗),Akethi Mituhide(=明智光秀),etc
There has been left a sense of battle. These
ware in strong regret. resentment and not rest in peace or
Enlightenment.
I was scared. I was trotting through to “Ichinohasi(=brige of
okoniinn)“
And then I arrived at Ichino-bridge. I was feeling
so clear. refleshed and felt beautiful energy =Reiki (霊気).Reiki is healing energy.
I knew that under neath Ichinohashi are written
“Sansklit Characters =Bonnji(梵字)“
after my visit in Mount Koya
Bonji is Sansklit Characters of Buddhism. Bonji
is used as a character of the Buddhist Scripture.
This means that the bridge (=Ichino-bridge)
is covered by e barrier (=Kekkai,結界) protects Okunoin from residual sense of historic battle. strongly regret.
resentment and not rest in peace or Enlightment.
I walked to Touroudou(=燈籠堂)
I arrived at there. Suddenly I caught ringing
of my mobile phone without timer when I entered there.
Timer showed me “3:33” without timer.
This surprised me because “No3 is important
number in Buddhism, “
In addition “3:33” is Trinity!!!
I tried to stop my mobile quickly timer. But
I did not turn off!
In a hurry I walked out. And then I tried to
turn the power supply off.
In Touroudou. (=燈籠堂).
There were many Monks were chanting. kukai(=空海)of the painting
and Red Dragon on the wall.
Around there is an atmosphere of beaty. Mystery.
quiet and stillness.
Many foreign
monks were around walking and chanting who wear orang color robes.
We went back
to Shukubo(=inn) then we took a bath and had a dinner as Shoujin Style(=精進料理)
The Syoujin
Style food doesn’t cooking with animals which is just only vegetable and beans food,
Those food
is named “Syojinn- Style Food” which is decorated with colorful and beautiful ingredients
by scrupulously arrangement.
We eat it
with a grateful mind.
After dinner, I read a book about kukai in the
room.
The book excited me and I understood a lot about
kukai.
That day was Full-Moon.
I was looking at the Full-Moon and thinking
about Kukai.
Then I got a message of inspiration that I had
forgotten to visit somewhere in Okuno-in.
I thought “this is just my imagination”.
But this emotion escalated a more and more.
I could not stop my emotion!
Finally, I asked my husband to go and visit
Okuno-in again.
My husband was willing to go!
Next morning, I woke up at 5 :30 AM.
We prepared to join the morning ceremony, chanting
and Gomtkaki of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
The morningt ceremony started off at 6 AM.
There were a lot of people joining the Morning
ceremony that included powerful chanting and “Gomataki” and meditation!
Gomataki is the belief that the fire of gomataki
burning away desires and bad intensions and keeps away evil spirt though “Shingon
Esoteric Buddahism”
Gomataki said “Sacred ritual.”
After we experienced this we went to Taterikojin-Shrin
(=立里荒神)by a car.
We went through “ryujinn-skyline(=dragon-syline,龍神スカイライン) to parking at the shrine.
From there we walked ,climbed and passed through
a lot of Torii(=torii-gate ,鳥居)to the shrine.
The gates purify the spirit and energy of spirit
of people.
These are preparations to meet God.
When I arrived in front of the shrine, there
was an old couple.
A few minutes later, they left.
I was given the gift of “synchronicity! (=coincidence)”
just God and myself alone together for 20 minutes!
I felt very lucky!
The God of Taterikojin-shrine is the God of
Fire. A Natural element of Earth.
So, the Shrine’s energy was very powerful!
I understood that Kukai visited there many times.
Kukai asked the Fire-God for permission to create
a Dojo(=practice,道場) of “Shingon
Esoteric Buddahism in Mount-koya .
Kukai had to make peace with nature and the
Fire-God in order to create the first Dojo for “Shingon
Esoteric Buddahism.
I was at there about 30minutes and felt the
energy of the Fire-God.
I went back to the car and we rode back to Okuno-in
I arrived a back at the car park at Okuno-in
and it was full!
“Wow! Synchronicity(=coincidence)”
I ran to okuno-in.
I felt a feeling like Reiki(= 霊気) when I passed though the Ichino-bridge yesterday.
Firstly, the Monks dedicate a meal to Kukai which
is called “Syoujingu(=生身供) .
“Syoujinngu” has been dedicated to Kuukai twice
a day since 21st March AD 835.
When kukai entered into eternity meditation
by practice of “Shingon Esoteric Buddahism.
This tradition has been passed down through
generation to now,as Kukai is belived to meditate to this day.
I was so lucky! Good timing! ,
synchronicity, I met “Syoujinngu.
But it was a different feeling that I caught
inspiration from yesterday, “I had forgotten something in Okuno-in.”
I walked around there like I did yesterday.
There were fewer people than yesterday. I thought
the reason was that it’s early morning.
I felt nothing there.
When I decided to go back, I felt powerful energy
from under the area.
I looked and saw the name “Chika-Houba(=地下法場)“
It scared me.I wanted to run away.
And then one monk wearing an orange robe with
glasses who was a white person , he went out from “Chika-Houba(=地下法場)“ and he looked at me , command me to go into
“Chika-Houba(=地下法場) his two fingers pointed there . And
then he went away.
I was so surprised!!
But My legs began to move and I stepped to into“Chika-Houba” despite being in two mind if a wanted to enter or not.
The moment, I moved step down the stairs I was
feeling numb in my fingers.
And then numbness increased and escalated to
expand my body except my face.
My body moved like I was being sucked back into
the “Chika-Houba”.
There were a lot of hanging lanterns from the
roof and many people in there.
The location in front of Kukai is painted on
white a large white cloth.
There was an offertory box.
That moment I thought “wow! I need to pay money
have too?”.
I heard a man’s voice from the left side of
roof. It was such a gentle and kind voice.
The Voice said “you don’t need to pay. just
step forward!”.
I felt fear, and then I went back to the Okuno-in
car park and rode back home.
About 30 minutes later I was wrapped by mystic
feelings by a voice in “Chika-Houba“.
I was looking for information online about the
place where Kukai was painted back in “Chika-Houba
I found out where Kukai was made a self-mummy
in 28th March, AD835
I was just moment that Kukai still be a meditation
in there in Okuno-in.
I felt that I got inspiration at the Syukubo(=inn)
with the Full-Moon on the night of the 28th April
2028.
Telling me to go and meet kukai.
I sometime receive messages from higher dimension!
For example. While driving alone, when I ‘m
deep meditation or when visiting shines and temples.
Just now my company has celebrated its 10th
anniversary since I established it.
Kukai ‘s voice message
impressed and remined me “Don’t forget passion when you start off your company .
keep going one step or half step Forwards with courage in your life.”
The way in which my yoga customer guided me
to visit Mount Koya and Okuno-in and receive the message from Kukai felt spiritual.
In Other words, Kukai used the yoga customer
to push me to go Mount Koya!
We use the word “goen(=ご縁)” in Japanese to explain a strange
or invisible connection or relationship .
If you visit Japan, I recommend Mount Koya and
Okuno-in!
